Good Grief!  It's Kim Pawelek (former USA Marathon Champion) & Keith Brantly (1996 Olympic Marathoner) competing in the 2005 JTC Wife Carry Race

Because of Kim's diminutive stature, she had to wear a 15 pound weight belt to bring her up to the required minimum weight

Despite their impressive running credentials, they placed second in the race.  See the results below -

Ginger Fannin King Couples Relay & Second Annual Wife Carry Race

April 9, 2005     Richard Fannin - Director

All entry fees are donated to the Community Hospice of NE Florida

JTC’s Ginger Fannin King Couples Relay began calmly enough with twenty-two ladies toeing the start line.  Calm prevailed after the start until - somewhat sooner than expected – a diminutive runner (who shall go nameless until you read the results) came racing back to the exchange area to tag her partner.  Officials, male runners, and spectators gasped as the women’s leader finished in 13:47 – an amazing time for a 5 km beach run especially with a headwind in the last half of the race.

Nearly three minutes later other ladies began returning - minutes below their personal 5 km best times.  It seemed that the lead runner thought the back of the two-mile mark was the turnaround point and ten other ladies were content to follow her.  More than seven minutes after the last 2.2 mile runner finished, the eleven ladies who ran the entire 5 km began coming in – fittingly led by Jennifer Medley, Ginger Fannin’s younger daughter.  The race staff split the finishers into two groups based on total distance run and prizes were awarded accordingly at a great post-race social at the Sun Dog .

In the Wife Carry Race, Amber Krug and Seth White prefaced their second place finish in the shorter relay by beating two other couples.  No wife drops and a longer course made the event less bruising but more strenuous than last year.

Many thanks are extended to Bonnie Brooks, Trish Kabus, Lamar Strother, Kent Smith, Doug Tillett, and all the other volunteers who made the races possible.
