Ginger Fannin Couples Relay

 A beautiful February afternoon brought out a large group of visitors to Neptune Beach as well as a group of earnest competitors in the 2006 Ginger Fannin Couples Relay and Wife Carry Race.  In the relay format, the female partner runs an out-and back 5 km on the beach and tags her male partner who retraces the course.

JC Pinto led the ladies by nearly two minutes in 18:59 when she tagged her husband Joey.  He ran an identical time that gave the couple the overall victory by almost three minutes.  Patti  and Rodney Smith won the masters competition.  (Rodney was the first race director of the Couples Relay.)  Douglas Green sped to the men’s fastest time with a 18:56 clocking.

Roz Hoffman and Steve O’Brien continued their streak as the only couple to have run all the races in the modern series.  Race director Richard Fannin and his sister Jennifer Medley honored their late mother, for whom the race is named, by running as a team. 

Alison and Paul Frase won the Wife Carry Race by only four seconds against six other teams – our largest field in this 3-year old addition to the relay.
